Mirumi at CES vs. the Retail Model: How to Read Old Specifications

A CES feature list is a record of what a company presented at that stage. Before using it to choose a product today, check whether each detail is tentative, documented for the retail model, or still unresolved. That distinction is especially useful with Mirumi.

This is a document comparison checked on October 7, 2026, not a hands-on comparison of two units. It covers Yukai Engineering’s CES announcement, its later Japanese release history, and the manufacturer’s US Gray listing. It does not authenticate inventory sold by another shop.

Disclosure: This article is published by mirumirobot.com, a store that sells Mirumi. The comparison uses the manufacturer sources linked below.

Start with the product stage

Yukai’s announcement page is dated January 6, 2025. It describes Mirumi’s origin in an internal 2024 Make-a-Thon and explicitly labels its feature list tentative. Its event schedule identifies CES 2025. Read the original announcement.

A September 29, 2026 manufacturer release supplies a later timeline: the CES debut came before crowdfunding and the April 2026 Japanese retail launch. Keep that geography attached to the date; a Japanese launch does not establish when a particular US order ships. Read the later manufacturer history.

Put each specification in the right evidence bucket

Tentative announcement: The CES document describes a distance sensor and an inertial measurement unit, or IMU. It connects those components with detecting nearby people or objects and movement. These are historical design descriptions, not a current retail hardware inventory. CES source.

Current documented features: The September 2026 Japanese BLACK release lists responses to sound or voices and a head touch sensor. This tells us what that release documents; it does not by itself establish identical internals in every color or market. Japanese model source.

Current US reference measurements: The US Gray listing gives approximately 100 mm width, 110 mm depth including the arms, 140 mm height, and 155 g weight. Use those labeled measurements when assessing the listed model, rather than an unlabeled number copied from an older story. They are manufacturer specifications, not our measurements. US Gray specifications.

Still unresolved: The documents reviewed here do not establish whether the early distance sensor or IMU was retained, replaced, or removed in a particular retail unit. A short specification list leaving out a component cannot answer that question.

A useful check for any older review

Before relying on a feature, ask:

  1. Does the article identify a prototype, crowdfunding sample, or retail unit?
  2. Does its source say a feature is planned or tentative?
  3. Does the model, market, and document date match the product you are considering?
  4. Is the statement a published specification, an observed behavior, or an inference about hidden hardware?

If a purchase depends on a particular sensor, ask the seller for the exact model documentation or a manufacturer answer. A video of a head turning may help illustrate the behavior; it cannot identify every component responsible for it.

The practical conclusion is to keep the CES story as development history and use model-matched retail documents for buying decisions. Where those records stop, leave the hardware question open instead of turning a documentation change into a claimed redesign.
